Newcastle United told they must make Real Sociedad's Alexander Isak their ‘statement signing’

Darren Ambrose has urged his former club Newcastle United to sign Alexander Isak. Chronicle Live understands the Magpies are in advanced talks over a move for the Real Sociedad striker - valued at £60million.

A mediocre campaign last season saw Isak net just six league goals in 32 outings. However, the Swedish international emerged as one of the hottest properties in Europe the previous year, bagging 17 in all competitions.

It is no secret that Eddie Howe is keen on bolstering his attacking options before the transfer window slams shut. At 6ft 4in, Isak certainly boasts the physicality to cut it in the Premier League. Chris Wood is the only backup option to first-choice striker Callum Wilson after the departure of Dwight Gayle.

Ambrose - who had a two-year stint on Tyneside in the noughties - believes Newcastle still need a “statement” summer signing. Sven Botman’s arrival from Lille has been the standout arrival so far.

Speaking to talkSPORT earlier this summer, he said: “He (Isak) didn't have a fantastic season in terms of goals last season but the year before (he was) brilliant for Real Sociedad.

“It’s a lot of money but we've spoken about this before. Newcastle need to make that statement signing. They've not done much so far this summer. They’ve built their foundations - (now) make a statement signing. I think he could be one of them.”
