Newcastle United tipped to 'cover their backs' with January transfer plan

Newcastle could be forced to rely on loan signings in the January transfer market as a result of their perilous league position.

That's according to former Leeds United Striker Noel Whelan who told Football Insider it would be a "sensible" approach.

The Magpies have become just the fourth team in Premier League history to surpass game week 14 and still be without a win in the Premier League - the other three sides to have completed a similar feat were all relegated to the Championship.

Eddie Howe's side are currently six points adrift from safety and need a monumental turn around if they're to stave off relegation.

However, all is not lost.

With 72 points still to play for, Newcastle have a fighting chance of survival with the right investment in January.

Reports last week suggested that the Magpies could rely solely on loan signings in the upcoming transfer window with potential targets somewhat put off on a move to St. James' Park given their current Premier League standing.

While the reports are unconfirmed, there lies some logic within the rumours, according to Whelan.

He said: “It’s a sensible move, and possibly the only way they can do business in January when you look at where they are in the table.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty and worry at Newcastle. They have to cover their backs by going about things sensibly.

“Loan signings are going to be crucial. They need to get the right players in who can give them that helping hand to stay in the Premier League.

“They might have identified players they really want in the long run. However, they won’t be realistic targets in a January window.”
