Newcastle United teenage whizz-kid being tracked by England - despite already representing Scotland

Newcastle United teenager Elliot Anderson is being watched by English FA talent spotters as his profile continues to grow.

The 17-year-old has already represented Scotland at Under-16 and Under-17 level but the country of his grandma are now understood to be aware of England's interest and are looking to fast-track him to senior level.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke, a former Newcastle coach, is understood to be aware of the interest in Anderson from England.

Anderson scored a wonderful solo goal in Newcastle's 6-2 win over Scunthorpe United in last week's Premier League Cup tie at Whitley Park with the midfielder scoring his second at Under-23 level following a goal against Port Vale's first team in the Leasing.com Trophy earlier this term.

Despite operating as a deep-lying midfielder he glided through the Iron defence before planting a firm finish past the keeper to demonstrate what a great talent the club have on their hands.

Born in North Shields, but brought up in Whitley Bay, Anderson is regarded as one of the best young talents between 17 and 20 at United right now.

The youngster already has a boot deal in place with Nike and has been at United's Academy since the age of nine.

This wouldn't be the first time that Newcastle have had a player caught up in an international tug of war between Scotland and England with Andy Carroll wanted north of the border in 2010 before being capped by England at senior level in 2011, and more recently Mackenzie Heaney opting for England ahead of the Scots.

When asked about international ambitions Anderson told the Chronicle last year: "I have played for Scotland Under-18s too, I have been doing well and got the man of the match when I last played for them.

"Hopefully I can add to that.

"My grandma is Scottish so that's the link there."
