Newcastle United team news: Steve Bruce rings the changes as he makes surprise changes

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce sprung a surprise when handing Karl Darlow a start against Manchester City for the quarter-final clash in the FA Cup.

Darlow was supposed to play in the original fixture back in March but the season was suspended, allowing Martin Dubravka to get fit.

Bruce had gave Dubravka some public backing after a mistake in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

Whether Bruce is sticking to an original promise or has dropped Dubravka can only be answered by the head coach in either his flash interviews before the game or the post-game Press conference.

Bruce also freshened his side up with Sean Longstaff coming into midfield, Fabian Schar returning to the defence and Andy Carroll leading the line.

Jonjo Shelvey was not risked from the start with the midfielder suffering with a niggle in the build-up to the game.

Carroll's starting role meant Joelinton was relegated to the bench while Matty Longstaff was also back on the sidelines amid talk of a move to Udinese.

UNITED : Darlow, Manquillo, Fernandez, Lascelles, Schar, Rose, S.Longstaff, Hayden, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Carroll.

Subs: Dúbravka, Shelvey, Joelinton, Gayle, Muto, Krafth, Yedlin, Lazaro, Longstaff.
