Newcastle United team news: Steve Bruce raises eyebrows by ringing the changes

Steve Bruce's team selection raised a few eyebrows at the Vitality Stadium as Miguel Almiron started on the bench.

There was also a surprise place in the starting line-up for Emil Krafth while Nabil Bentaleb and Jonjo Shelvey returned to the team.

Sean Longstaff retained his place in midfield while Dwight Gayle and Joelinton were the preferred starters in attack.

Martin Dubravka came back into the team to replace Karl Darlow who was handed a run out against Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

And Danny Rose was rested with Javier Manquillo starting the game at left-back.

All of the moves are believed to be part of Bruce's squad rotation plans but £21million man Almiron has rarely not started a match since arriving in England.

United lined up with a cool breeze sweeping across the Vitality Stadium and while there are no fans permitted access to the stadium the slightly contrasting sight of a busy Kings Park next door to the ground made for a surreal build-up to the game as the team arrived.

UNITED : Dubravka, Krafth, Fernandez, Lascelles, Manquillo, S. Longstaff, Bentaleb, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin, Gayle, Joelinton.

Subs : Darlow, Schar, Yedlin, Rose, Lazaro, Hayden, Ritchie, Almiron, Carroll.
