Newcastle United team news: No Dwight Gayle but Longstaff brothers continue in midfield

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce resisted the temptation to start with Dwight Gayle against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And goal starved Miguel Almiron retained his place in the starting XI.

Bruce’s main call was to replace injured Fabian Schar with former Argentina international Federico Fernandez in the centre of defence.

With Andy Carroll out injured with a groin issue, Yoshinori Muto took a place on the bench as striker cover.

Wolves arrived on Tyneside on the back of another win in Europe - this time against Slovan Bratislava,

Steve Bruce said before the game: “They have excellent players and have done remarkably well in a short period of time.

“They are one of the best sides I have ever seen in the Championship two seasons ago and they have outstanding individuals.

“It will be a difficult game.”

UNITED : Dubravka, Yedlin, Fernandez, Lascelles, Clark, Willems, Sean Longstaff, Matty Longstaff, Almiron, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin

Subs: Darlow, Dummett, Krafth, Shelvey, Atsu, Gayle, Muto
