Newcastle United team news: Magpies make one change, with Carroll and Saint-Maximin on the bench

Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce boosted his substitutes bench with the additions of Andy Carroll and Allan Saint-Maximin for the home clash with Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Geordie striker was involved in United colours for the first time since December 2010.

As far as Bruce’s starting XI was concerned, he named Joelinton in attack with Miguel Almiron alongside him while Emil Krafth was left out against the Seagulls.

It meant that Javier Manquillo returned to the line-up from the start and Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden continued to patrol the midfield.

Despite making the match day squad, Matty Longstaff was left off the bench.

Bruce said of Carroll before the game: “Listen, he’s the local lad who was desperate to come back.

“He’s got nothing to prove to anybody has he?

“We’re just delighted that he’s got himself in this position and worked extremely hard.

“It would lift the whole atmosphere if he got off the bench.

“It’s great to see him.

“I am absolutely delighted and being selfish for me too, and the staff.”
