Steve Bruce recalled his fit-again skipper Jamaal Lascelles for the home clash with Manchester United at St James' Park.
Lascelles replaced Swiss international Fabian Schar and was the only change for the Magpies after the international break.
The Magpies went into the game after beating Burnley last time out in the Premier League and achieving a home win last season in the same fixture against the Red Devils when Matty Longstaff's strike nicked it.
Bruce resisted the temptation to start with Scotland's man of the moment Ryan Fraser with Joelinton preferred in the offensive half of the field.
The game came too early for the Longstaff brothers while Andy Carroll had to settle for a place on the bench.
Javier Manquillo was left out in favour of Emil Krafth in Bruce's defensive rearguard.
