Newcastle United team news: Jamaal Lascelles returns as Mo Diame edges near contract extension

Rafa Benitez brought back skipper Jamaal Lascelles into his starting XI at Arsenal.

Lascelles has been missing due to a knee injury, but he came back in to replace Federico Fernandez at the Emirates Stadium.

The Spaniard also stuck with Miguel Almiron despite fears of fatigue while DeAndre Yedlin also remained in the starting XI.

Benitez’s decision to make just one change to the line-up meant another stint on the bench for Jonjo Shelvey, while Yoshinori Muto - despite asking the manager for more game-time - was also just a sub.

Rafa Benitez delivers important message to his players ahead of Arsenal clash tonight

The exciting trio of Ayoze Perez, Salomon Rondon and Almiron were put up against an Arsenal side bidding for third place in the top-flight and looking to make it 10 wins on the bounce at home.

Asked about his players, Benitez had said before the game: “They are showing character and confidence.

“So in the end against Everton, which was a difficult game against a very good team, we were fighting until the end.

“And it was a boost for everybody in terms of confidence.

“At Bournemouth we deserved more because of what we did before.”

UNITED : Dubravka, Yedlin, Lejeune, Lascelles, Dummett, Ritchie, Hayden, Diame, Perez, Almiron, Rondon

Subs: Darlow, Ki, Shelvey, Muto, Kenedy, Fernandez, Manquillo
