Newcastle United team news: Formation revealed as Steve Bruce opts for experience at Anfield

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce turned to Jonjo Shelvey to replace Sean Longstaff at Anfield.

The former Liverpool man gets the chance to show the Kop what he is capable of once again with Longstaff sidelined due to an ankle injury .

The midfielder’s younger brother Matty was named on the bench on a sunny day on Merseyside.

Otherwise, Bruce kept faith with 10 of the side that held Watford to a 1-1 draw a St James’ Park before the international break.

A 3-2-4-1 formation is widely expected to be the opening line-up against the Reds.

Joelinton and Miguel Almiron will lead the line for United.

Bruce said before the game: “Liverpool are as good a team as you can get.

“They are the European champions.

“But we have to take part in the game.”
