Newcastle United team news as Steve Bruce makes changes

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce made changes for their difficult clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Matty Longstaff was handed his first start of the season while Federico Fernandez was back in the opening line/up and handed the captain’s armband.

Bruce went with Longstaff alongside Isaac Hayden in midfield and Matt Ritchie was also back.

But Bruce - as he mentioned before the game - opted to rest Callum Wilson ahead of the hectic run of games.

It meant Sean Longstaff was also just sub but teenager Elliot Anderson got his chance on the bench.

Bruce has plenty attacking options with Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Wilson on standby.

The Magpies were 28/1 to get an unlikely victory on a typically wet Manchester night.

Newcastle : Darlow, Yedlin, Schar, Fernandez (c), Clark, Ritchie, Hayden, Matty Longstaff, Murphy, Almiron, Joelinton

Subs : Gillespie, Krafth, Lewis, Manquillo, S Longstaff, Elliot Anderson, Carroll, Gayle, Wilson
