Newcastle United team news as Jacob Murphy handed chance in place of banned Joelinton

Eddie Howe called on Jacob Murphy to replace the suspended Joelinton on the South Coast for the big clash against Southampton.

Murphy put in a solid cameo against Aston Villa in the 4-0 win last weekend and was rewarded with a place in the front three alongside in form duo Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson.

That meant the midfield remained the same with Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes restored and Jonjo Shelvey having to wait for his first start of the season.

And Allan Saint-Maximin must also be patient after coming back from injury with the Frenchman having to be content with a place on the bench.

Howe stuck with his winning defensive formula of Nick Pope in goal, Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Sven Botman and Dan Burn in the rearguard.

Matt Targett is another who has to fight for his place while Elliot Anderson was also named as sub. And there was a return to the bench for Karl Darlow.

UNITED: Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn, Longstaff, Willock, Guimaraes, Almiron, Murphy, Wilson.

Subs: Darlow, Lascelles, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin, Targett, Manquillo, Wood, Fraser, Anderson.
