Newcastle United target Kristoffer Ajer passes medical at Brentford ahead of £13.5m move

Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer has passed a medical at Brentford ahead of his £13.5million move from the Scottish Premiership side.

Despite having a limited transfer budget this summer, Newcastle have watched Ajer, who can play in central defence or as a right-sided defender, and had been impressed with the Norway international.

The 23-year-old, who helped the Bhoys win a treble-treble of domestic trophies during his time in Glasgow, had also reportedly drawn interest from Norwich City and Bayer Leverkusen.

But it is newly promoted Brentford who look set to land his signature this week with Sky Sports reporting the deal has largely been agreed with only the final details to be concluded.

Ajer has been left out of Celtic's squad for this evening's Champions League qualifier clash with Danish side FC Midtjylland and all signs seem to suggest he is set to swap Glasgow for West London.

Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce is known to be in the market for a new centre-half this summer and that has only been heightened by news of the imminent departure of Florian Lejeune.

The Magpies have accepted a bid from Spanish side Deportivo Alaves for the 30-year-old and the former Eibar and Manchester City defender is set to turn a successful loan stay with the La Liga outfit into a permanent deal.
