Newcastle United takeover: Mike Ashley 'meets Mexican businessmen' interested in buying club

Newcastle United have been linked with another takeover after reports linked Mike Ashley with a meeting with Mexican businessmen in London to discuss selling the club.

The Magpies have issued a "no comment" status on the report.

But ChronicleLive understands that no party has come anywhere near bidding the asking price to take United off the Sports Direct magnate's hands.

The Magpies remain up for sale for a price of around £350m and, while Ashley is believed to be losing patience with former Manchester United and Chelsea supremo Peter Kenyon, he is still open to other offers.

A report in the Athletic claims talks between Ashley and two unnamed Mexicans took place in the capital last week. It is stated the meeting did not go well and ended in negative manner.

Ashley has taken a back seat this season and has not been spotted at any matches. However, he sent his close aide Justin Barnes to the 1-0 win over Man United earlier this month to take a closer look at how the club is operating.

It remains to be seen whether the Mexican group who reportedly met Ashley in London were the Orlegi Group, led by Alejandro Irarragorri and owners of the club Santos Laguna.

The Orlegi Group were linked with a takeover earlier this year.

Speaking about a takeover in the summer, Ashley said: "The day someone buys Newcastle, they'll do their due diligence - and finished.

"It will happen like Manchester City. By the time the media find out, it's already complete."
