Newcastle United takeover 'limbo' brought up in Parliament again as Premier League accused by MP

The Newcastle United takeover has once again been raised in the Houses of Parliament as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Oliver Dowden addressed questions related to football governance.

North Tyneside Labour MP Mary Glindon said the club's fans were being "left in limbo" by the Premier League over the takeover - and asked Dowden whether it would hasten the fan-led review of football governance.

In Digital, Culture, Media and Sport questions on Thursday morning, she said: "The hopes and ambitions of thousands of Newcastle fans for their great club are held in limbo due to the ongoing takeover saga which the Premier League has helped to create," she said.

"Can there be a more pressing need for the minister to deliver a fan-led review into football governance planned in his party's manifesto?"

Dowden - who has maintained that the Government will not interfere in the deal - said the saga had helped reaffirm the need for the review.

He pledged that there would be "further progress" this year on the review.

"I'd like to remind the Right Honourable Lady I remain firmly committed to the fan-led review due to the events mentioned in my opening remarks (about racism).

"The events relating to football finance over the last year have demonstrated the need for that and we will be making further progress on it this year."

The deal is currently stalled after the Saudi PIF pulled out of the deal last summer, but there are hopes it can be revived - with arbitration between Mike Ashley and the Premier League set to be heard soon.

Both Ashley and Amanda Staveley's PCP Capital hope a breakthrough on key issues can be brokered which would allow the deal to resume. PIF would be open to returning to the table if a clear path to passing the Owners and Directors tests was laid out.

The Premier League has been heavily criticised for their approach by fans but Richard Masters said he was hoping for a timely resolution in a December letter to another North East MP.
