GACP Sports Capital chairman Joseph DaGrosa has broken his silence on interest in buying Newcastle United.
The chairman and CEO of Great American Capital Partners, , confirmed constructive conversations with Justin Barnes but indicated that a deal was unlikely, appearing to confirm that they are out of the running.
Although he said the two parties are “still talking” he said an agreement looked “unlikely”.
No specific reason was given in a phone interview with NBC Sports, the broadcaster reported , but he did give Ashley’s team praise for the way they conducted talks.
“I can certainly confirm interest,” DaGrosa told NBC Sports of his talks on Newcastle.
“I will confirm that I’ve had conversations with Mike Ashley’s top representative. I would describe those conversations as very positive.
“I would say Mike Ashley and his team are a lot easier and a lot friendlier and business savvy than anyone gives them credit for. We’re still talking. I’m not sure we’re going to reach an agreement, but that’s certainly not because of either side’s intractability or unwillingness to move forward.”
GACP are still looking at European clubs, he confirmed.
“In terms of our other plans, we’ve maintained all along we want to be players in sports, particularly soccer, and we’re looking not only in Europe but in South America right now.
“Negotiations are going on right now with a couple of clubs, and I think the best is yet to come for GACP Sports.”
The club remains up for sale but despite interest, no deal appears imminent.
