Newcastle United takeover: Fresh twist in Mike Ashley legal row as Premier League granted extra time

Newcastle United's anti-competition claim against the Premier League has now been delayed further until July 12.

The Premier League have been granted extra time to file and serve its evidence meaning the process has been slowed down, as expected, even further.

The top-flight's legal team have more time to provide evidence to support their jurisdiction claim with Richard Masters and co believing it is too similar to the arbitration case which is scheduled for an unspecified date this month.

The Hon Mr Justice Roth, in court documents, stated: "The Defendant is granted an extension of time in which to file and serve itsevidence in reply until 5pm on 12 July 2021.

"I am satisfied that the requested short extension of seven days will not prejudice the listing of the hearing of the Jurisdiction Application and is reasonable given the concurrent demands on the Defendant in preparing for the arbitration proceedings."

As reported on Chronicle Live last week, Mike Ashley was already frustrated by the delays caused by the Premier League.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal had already been handed a lengthy dossier by the Premier League who are defending Ashley's claim against them.

But the top-flight, who have been accused of "delay tactics" by members of the Middle East consortium, have another week to provide the evidence needed to get the case thrown out.

Should the hearing be announced the Premier League would then get themselves a chance to defend against Ashley's claims.
