Newcastle United takeover: Amanda Staveley's hopes and fears at St James' Park revealed

Amanda Staveley is fearful that the Premier League's refusal to offer up transparency amid the club's legal battle to push through the takeover could mean the would-be buyers and Mike Ashley will never get a "fair hearing".

Staveley, the Reuben brothers and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund watched on last year as the £340million sale collapsed after the top-flight refused to approve or reject their bid to take over Newcastle United.

Instead, Staveley's party walked away and Ashley was left to operate again for the 2020/21 season.

Staveley, talking to Sky Sports, said: "I was mystified, it took 17 months.

"To not get a decision!

"I was staggered, then we're still here from that period 15 months on.

"We have still tried and our heart is trying to acquire the club.

"We are determined to do so.

"It has been an extraordinary process."

Staveley also pledged to invest in the city and the club if the takeover goes through but says the Premier League are making life difficult.

She said: "Investment in sport, not just sport but in Newcastle is really needed.

"This isn't just an investment that is focused on a football club.

"And if we don't get that intervention from the government I fear the process will just lapse and we will never have a fair hearing."
