Newcastle United take Duncan Ferguson's son Cameron on trial

Newcastle United have taken a look at Cameron Ferguson on trial after his release from Tranmere Rovers.

The son of United cult hero Duncan Ferguson scored in the 4-3 win over Sunderland in the Under-18s' win at Little Benton on Tuesday afternoon.

Ferguson spent time earlier in his career with Everton, like his father, before the switch to Prenton Park.

Newcastle signed Big Dunc from Everton back in 1998 with the former Scotland star spending two years under both Ruud Gullit and Sir Bobby Robson.

The striker sees his contract with Rovers come to an end next month with Newcastle looking to get their youth squad ready for next season.

As it stands, Steve Harper is caretaker boss of the club's overall Academy business and the former goalkeeper could start next season in charge at Little Benton.

After a respectable run to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup, when the youngsters were beaten by Aston Villa at St James' Park, the Academy side will be looking to build on things next season.

Newcastle are expected to run the rule over more trial players at both Under-18 and Under-23 level this summer.
