Newcastle United-supporting MP on what politicians can do next after Premier League don't reply

MPs have not received 'any response whatsoever' from the Premier League after writing to the governing body following the collapse of Newcastle United's takeover - and Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery admits they will need to consider 'further options' if the silence continues.

Mr Lavery, a Magpies' supporter, is one of 40 MPs who have committed to writing to the governing body after fans sent more than 7,000 letters to their local representatives.

Supporters have called on the Premier League to break their silence after the buyers - Amanda Staveley, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and the Reuben Brothers - withdrew their offer on July 30.

Fans have also got in contact with the Independent Football Ombudsman (IFO), Professor Derek Fraser, who has advised the Premier League to make a statement - a sentiment backed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Mr Lavery has yet to hear back from the Premier League, but insists there are still further options for MPs to explore if the governing body maintain their silence.

"Regardless of what happens here, if we don't get a result from the Premier League in terms of some sort of statement or explanation then I think we need to consider further options, which might be to raise it via an adjournment debate in the House of Commons, raise it with the DCMS Select Committee," he told Sky Sports News.

"This might just be the catalyst which means that football supporters nationwide might be invited in through the doors to be involved in the decision-making process."

Since the takeover collapsed, thousands of fans have joined the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust (NUST) and more than 105,000 people have signed a petition calling for an independent investigation.

However, the Premier League have not yet felt moved to comment and that silence has extended to those politicians who have written to the governing body.

"We haven't had any response whatsoever, not even an acknowledgement of receipt from the Premier League, which I think is fairly disrespectful," Mr Lavery added.

"Not just to the members of parliament but to the hundreds and hundreds if not thousands and thousands of constituents here in the North East who ask the MPs to try and move this process on, to try and see exactly what conclusion they have come to because it's just shrouded in utter secrecy.

"The football supporters deserve to have some sort of understanding of what's happened here with the Premier League because the silence has only united everyone against the Premier League so we need answers as soon as we possibly can.

"Cut out the disrespect. Respect the people who pay the money at the turnstiles every Saturday and during the week to support football in this wonderful country of ours."
