Newcastle United supporter named L'Equipe's 2019 Fan of the Year

A Newcastle United supporter has been named the 2019 Fan of the Year by leading French football title L'Equipe.

The fan, who can be found on Twitter with the handle @DJ_NUFC, hit headlines after he posted a hilarious video in the aftermath of the Magpies' 3-2 win over Everton in March.

The Toon supporter drove 110 miles just to laugh at his friend, an Everton fan, after he hadn't replied to his goading text messages.

The video went viral on social media, gaining 1,600 retweets and 7,500 likes, with many football fans applauding the level of pettiness involved. His hilarious stunt gained traction worldwide and has now been awarded in France.

Newcastle's win that day proved to be vital as they secured Premier League survival. A Salomon Rondon strike and a brace from Ayoze Perez secured an unlikely comeback victory after Rafa Benitez's side fell 2-0 behind at St James' Park.
