Newcastle United strengthen bid to make second quick deal after landing Kieran Trippier

Newcastle United are understood to have launched a bid for Everton's out of favour defender Lucas Digne.

The Magpies are hoping to announce the arrival of Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid on Thursday but want to follow up quickly with a second addition.

A £22.5million offer plus Geordie midfielder Sean Longstaff is believed to have been placed for the ex-Barcelona star.

Although, while Everton’s interest is long-term, we understand that Longstaff has held no talks with the Toffees at this stage or been informed of any fresh approach.

Digne is yet to agree to a move to Tyneside - despite an offer to end his Goodison Park nightmare after falling out with Rafa Benitez.

As reported earlier on Wednesday, former Middlesbrough striker Mikkel Beck, who represents Digne, is assessing all of the options in front of him at the moment.

And they not only include Newcastle's offer but also options at West Ham and Chelsea as well as a clutch of clubs interested in Serie A and La Liga.

The Longstaff situation remains unresolved at Newcastle after over two years of contract negotiations between both Mike Ashley's regime and the new ownership model.

When asked about Longstaff's contract limbo, Eddie Howe said at the end of last year: "I'm aware of course, Sean is a very good player and he will have an opportunity to showcase his talent.

"He can show to me and the club he has a long-term future here.

"It's in his hands as well not just our hands."

Longstaff is currently free to talk to clubs in Europe and can quit the club at the end of the season on a free transfer as he has reached the end of his existing deal.

He can also join another Premier League side at the end of the season.
