Newcastle United stopper Martin Dubravka thanks Rafa Benitez for supporting him throughout 2018/19 season

Martin Dubravka has thanked Rafa Benitez for supporting him throughout his first full season in the Premier League.

The Slovakia international overcome a slightly rocky period at the start of 2019 but Benitez resisted the urge to change goalkeepers with Dubravka repaying that faith with some excellent displays.

Dubravka had been linked with a move to Serie A side Juventus in the first half of the season, however, Benitez maintained his belief that the 30-year-old was content with life on Tyneside.

Benitez was also happy to weather the storm when Dubravka and Jamaal Lascelles clashed in the aftermath of a late equaliser against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, TV replays showed Dubravka was fouled by Willy Boly and Lascelles later apologised to the former Sparta Prague goalie.

When asked about his rapport with Benitez this term, Dubravka said: "I am very happy that I have played in most of the games.

"I really appreciate it.

"Obviously I came to England as an unknown player and I'm trying to build my reputation here.

"I am glad for that."

United are the Premier League's ninth best team since the turn of the year after transforming a relegation threatened campaign into a steady finish in the top-flight.

A final day 4-0 win over Fulham - which resulted in Dubravka keeping his 11th clean sheet of the season - continued a solid 2019 so far.

When asked about being in the top nine of the Premier League since Christmas, Dubravka said: "It is a big stat.

"Good stats will be helpful for us going forward and looking ahead to next season as well.

"Let's just go into next season and get as many points as possible."
