Newcastle United star suddenly fighting for spot rises to challenge at crucial moment vs Wolves

There was an air of uncertainty over who would start at left-back for Newcastle United as kick-off loomed on Sunday. Dan Burn, who has been solid for Eddie Howe's side this term, suddenly has to look over his permanently strapped up shoulder after Matt Targett's return to fitness.

The ex-Villa man hardly put a foot wrong in his first months on Tyneside but has had to watch on from the sidelines of late, thanks to injury and Burn's form, as the Blyth-born centre-back made the full-back role his own.

With Adama Traore, the rapid, baby-oiled doused winger, ready to go for Wolves on Sunday, Targett was the better option for a starting place in the eyes of a number of fans. However, just when he needed a solid game, Burn delivered.

Burn kept both Traore and Pedro Neto quiet throughout and ventured forward freely in a bid to try and support Allan Saint-Maximin whenever possible. The former Brighton defender was arguably the stand out performer at the back, alongside Newcastle co-star Fabian Schar, as the Magpies got their season back on track.

Burn has struggled at times this season when up against the likes of Manchester United's Antony and Arsenal sensation Bukayo Saka. As such, Targett's return to fitness has seen a vast amount of the Geordie faithful call for his return to the starting XI.

Howe has so far resisted those outside calls but has heaped praise on Targett for his work behind the scenes. “We’ve definitely missed Matt. First and foremost, he’s a great player. A great character,” the Newcastle boss said in recent weeks.

“He’s a very, very consistent trainer and someone who goes about his business in a very professional way. He’s got very different attributes to Dan and, in his own right, is an outstanding player. Having him back is a great boost for us.”

Targett is arguably fighting for his Newcastle future as speculation persists regarding a summer swoop at left-back. The north east outfit continued to be linked with the likes of Kieran Tierney ahead of what promises to be a busy transfer window.

For now the tussle for left-back is simply between Burn and Targett. After his Wolves showing, Burn looks to be winning the battle after a rare shaky period.
