Newcastle United star Miguel Almiron sent off for Paraguay after horror challenge against Mexico

In just seven minutes, we saw the best and worst of Newcastle United midfielder Miguel Almiron in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Almiron has dazzled for Newcastle since joining from Atlanta United on deadline day of the January transfer window.

Rafa Benitez would have hoped that Almiron would have continued the positive momentum while on international duty with Paraguay but it hasn't quite worked out that way.

Playing for the first time under new manager Eduardo Berizzo, Almiron started as Paraguay were beaten by Peru in New York on Friday evening.

The former Lanus star was then dropped to the bench for this morning's friendly against Mexico in California.

He was introduced as a 56th minute substitute with Paraguay 3-0 down and within three minutes he made an immediate impact.

Picking up the ball in Mexico's half, Almiron shifted the ball quickly out to his right to Oscar Romero, who fed in Hernan Perez to slot home.

Yet four minutes later Almiron was shown a straight red card for a horrendous challenge on Jose Juan Vazquez.

Almiron put in a late challenge on the Santos Laguna midfielder, dragging his studs down the back of his leg.

The challenge sparked a melee on the pitch and he left little choice but for the referee to show him a straight red card.

Not the best first impression to make in front of his new coach.

In his brief spell at Newcastle, the challenge seems out of character. Indeed, a quick look back through his time in Argentina and the USA shows Almiron to have been sent off just once before for two bookable offences.

Benitez will be happy Almiron has returned to Newcastle unscathed. But he will also be quick to stamp out challenges like that from his game.
