Steve Bruce has not ruled out signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose this summer.
Rose spent the back-end of last season on loan with Newcastle United and the Magpies are keen to get him back on a permanent deal.
But they are on a tight budget this summer, reported to be around £30m, and they also have other areas they must strengthen.
Nevertheless, Bruce is not ruling out a move for the full-back.
"On Danny Rose, we will have a look to see what will happen in the next few weeks," he told the Newcastle Chronicle.
"As I said, we've got to box clever because of the situation we are all in."
Speaking about Newcastle's transfer plans, he added: "As I have said many times, I didn't spend anything in January when I had the chance to because I didn't think they were the right quality.
"It could only happen to me! Keeping my money!
"We have been affected in that respect, but the key to it is to make sure you are shrewd and bring in the quality that makes the difference.
"It's easy for me to get four or five players in tomorrow but the thing is we have to box clever.
"Let's hope that we get that right."
