Newcastle United sources confirm Middle East interest and offer update on Sheikh Khaled

Newcastle United's senior sources have confirmed there is interest in a takeover from Dubai-based billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan.

However, while there have been bold claims that a deal is close to being "concluded", the suggestions from St James' Park are that there is "some way" to go on the purchase.

What has been confirmed is that discussions have taken place with the Abu Dhabi royal family member.

After fresh checks with Newcastle this morning, the club are refusing to make any further comment but there is a public demand for further updates from Geordie fans.

Nobody has denied the possibility of a takeover at this stage of the £350million price tag that was reported by the Sun late on Sunday evening.

Any potential new owner at St James' Park would have to pass the Premier League's Owners’ and Directors’ Test.

The test is applied to prospective owners and directors, who are then subject to a review on a seasonal basis.

Previous takeover bids from Amanda Staveley and Peter Kenyon have also collapsed despite both entering the due diligence stage.
