Newcastle United slip to fourth bottom in the Premier League table

Newcastle United have slipped to fourth-bottom in the Premier League despite not kicking a ball on Saturday afternoon.

Despite winning two of their last three matches, bad results either side of Christmas are now starting to catch up with them.

The Magpies sit in 17th place ahead of their Monday night trip to Chelsea with the next week including an equally difficult encounter away to Manchester United.

Burnley's comprehensive win at Selhurst Park over Crystal Palace pushed Newcastle down a place in the top-flight table and while they do have a 10-point cushion, Fulham have a game in hand.

The Cottagers picked up a point at St James' Park back in December and face Newcastle on the final day of the campaign in May.

Newcastle may take some solace from the fact that Fulham's next two games are also extremely tough with Scott Parker's side facing a Valentine's Day encounter at Everton tomorrow before a trip to Turf Moor to take on the Clarets on Wednesday night.

The bookies expect the Cottagers, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United all to go down but Newcastle are 3/1 to be relegated with Paddy Power and Bet Fred.

The other game to look out for on Saturday night is Brighton & Hove Albion's home game with Aston Villa.

The Seagulls, who are just one place above Newcastle, could put a three-point cushion between themselves and Steve Bruce's side.
