Newcastle United sign former Leeds United youngster Alfie Hughes on trial

Newcastle United have made an out of window signing by drafting in Leeds United youngster Alfie Hughes. The 19-year-old starred in the 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Monday night.

United Academy sources have confirmed to Chronicle Live that the midfielder is currently being considered for a permanent place at the club's Academy. Hughes is a left-winger who was born in Stockton but starred for Manchester United and Middlesbrough youth sides.

Hughes signed a professional deal with Leeds last year but now finds himself on Tyneside. Back then he said: “I’m quite a creative player, I like to get on the ball and make things happen and work hard for the team."

His current deal at Leeds expires at the end of the season, and Newcastle have quickly made their move to bolster their second string.
