Newcastle United set to land big financial windfall from long haul pre-season trip to China

Newcastle United will pocket a £1million bonus for participating in this year's Premier League Asia Trophy.

The Magpies will line up alongside West Ham United, Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers as Newcastle look to increase their global appeal in the Far East.

United will take part in two games, one in Nanjing and the other in Shanghai, between July 17 and July 20.

Newcastle's first game will take place at Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre while their final clash is at Shanghai’s Hongkou Stadium.

The club will also be taking part in a host of fan events during their stay in China with a big following expected from ex-pats in the Far East.

Speaking about the tournament, Lee Charnley told the Sunday Sun: "It is a fantastic opportunity to take part in a high profile lucrative Premier League tournament which can only help increase the global profile of the club."

Everything that Lee Charnley said after meeting media in St James' Park boardroom

In a week in which United announced a profit of £18.6million it also emerged that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez will get up to £100million to spend over the next two season.

Charnley said: "In terms of how we spend our money moving forward we would envisage spending it on quality rather than quantity – players that can really make the difference and improve the team."

Rafa Benitez has taken Newcastle to Ireland in the last three summers but due to their China jaunt, they will not hold a specific boot camp.

Benitez said: "There isn't enough time."

United could have further friendlies in Europe but are still finalising opponents while a home clash at St James' Park against good quality opponents is also set to be announced.

The Toon boss had previously said about the China trip: "In terms of the trip, commercially and financially it could be fine.

"But in terms of football it is not ideal.

"We prefer to stay close and not travel too far away.

"We do have experience in China and in Asia in general and know what we have to do to maximise the time we're there."
