Newcastle United set to confirm Valentino Lazaro deal in time for him to face Oxford United

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is hoping that Valentino Lazaro can make his debut against Oxford United - providing his paperwork is processed in time.

The Inter Milan winger is at the training ground putting the final touches to his loan move from the San Siro.

Lazaro flew over via a private jet last night and spent the night in a Tyneside hotel ahead of the formalities of the deal.

Bruce said today: “He’s here. He’s in the building which is a good sign. We had to fend off a couple of clubs.

“We hope to get the paperwork done so he can play tomorrow. There was big talk of Leipzig of course. But the idea of playing Premier League (has convinced him). His agent was here last weekend.”

When asked what he can bring to Newcastle, Bruce said: “He can play in a few positions. He is an out and out wide player. We are delighted we have got him. It’s that bit of quality, like Bentaleb.”

He is Newcastle’s second deal of the January window, having signed Nabel Bentaleb on Tuesday. The Algerian is also set to make his first appearance for the Magpies against League One opponents Oxford.
