Newcastle United are set for a seven figure sum after Peterborough agreed a deal to sell former striker Ivan Toney.
Toney made just two brief appearances for Newcastle in the Premier League before moving on to Posh in a deal worth around £350,000. But United inserted a sizeable sell-on clause into the deal - and with Peterborough quoting nearly £10million to interested suitors Newcastle will benefit from the transfer.
Whether they might have developed the player more at St James' Park is a moot point now, with Toney set to step up to the Championship or SPL, with Celtic interested.
It has never been disclosed how much the sell-on fee is but Darragh MacAnthony, Peterborough's owner and chairman, confirmed earlier this year it is a "very large" clause. Sources expect a seven figure sum for Newcastle if Posh get their asking price.
Now that looks likely to be triggered with Peterborough having agreed to let Toney leave after failing to win promotion.
"There’s a big club, which isn’t in England, involved, but we won’t have our pants pulled down on the fee," MacAnthony told the 'Hard Truth' podcast on Tuesday.
"We promised Ivan last January he could leave if we didn’t go up and he can, but for the right fee. He’s worth what we say he is worth. We are like the Mounties, we always get our man and we always get the price we want for our man."
Toney was a Graham Carr recommendation, joining Newcastle in 2015 as a 19-year-old to be part of the under-23 group.
He spent spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury and Wigan on loan before leaving St James' Park.
