Newcastle United sent message that more signings are still needed

Newcastle United supporters have been very happy to see the club’s new owners back up their promise to invest heavily in the January transfer window.

At the conclusion of deadline day, the Magpies could have feasibly spent in excess of £100m on new recruits as they look to avoid relegation.

In the last few days the signing of Bruno Guimaraes, and chase for the likes of Matt Targett and Dan Burn, have dominated the agenda on Tyneside with both identified by Newcastle as players who can help in the battle against the drop.

With the clock ticking however, we conducted a survey designed to take the pulse of Newcastle supporters and over 3,200 fans took part.

Of those to respond to the question: ‘Will Newcastle beat relegation if they sign Guimaraes and Burn?’ 41.4% believe the club now have enough to keep Eddie Howe’s side in the top flight.

However, 56.5% think further reinforcements are still needed to maintain Premier League status with centre back the area of the squad that needs strengthening most.

Despite Burn’s capabilities in the left centre-back role or at left-back, almost a third of fans who responded believe at least another central defender is needed before the window closes tonight.

A quarter of fans feel that another centre forward should be a priority so they will be desperate to see the negotiations with Ekitike progress between now and the end of the window.

Unsurprisingly, it was the signing of Guimaraes that particularly impressed supporters, especially as the Brazil midfielder has been linked with a number of moves to Europe’s elite clubs in the last couple of seasons.

An incredible 98.7% of fans who responded to the survey claimed they were happy with his arrival, slightly higher than the 94% who are happy with the signing of Burn.

An equally large majority, 68.2% , believe Guimaraes should come into the Newcastle squad in place of Jeff Hendrick.

That was a considerably bigger proportion of the fans compared to those believe Sean Longstaff should be the one to make way ( 15.1% ).

Meanwhile, Isaac Hayden ( 8% ), Jonjo Shelvey ( 5.4% ), Joelinton ( 1.7% ) and Joe Willock ( 1.7% ) were the others that received votes in that particular category.

When Newcastle return to action against Everton in just over a week’s time, it will be interesting to see if Guimaraes goes straight into the starting XI and, if so, who he replaces in the side.
