Newcastle United sent Gini Wijnaldum transfer message and told 'there's a deal to be done'

Newcastle United have been told there is a 'deal to be done' for former midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

That's the view of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, who believes the Magpies now 'have the funds' to re-sign the Premier League and Champions League winner.

Wijnaldum spent a solitary season on Tyneside, netting 11 times to finish as United's top scorer before moving to Liverpool after relegation.

The Dutch international spent five seasons on Merseyside before sealing a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.

However, the 30-year-old admitted in a recent interview with NOS that he has not enjoyed his start to life in the French capital.

Wijnaldum said: "I can't say I'm completely happy.

"Because the situation is not what I wanted. I think [not playing], it's a primary concern for every player."

Talk of unrest coupled with Newcastle's newfound financial might has inevitably led to speculation over a January move.

While there is no indication such a deal could be on the cards, pundit Campbell believes it is an option the Magpies should pursue.

He told Football Insider: “Of course it is, 100 per cent.

“If he is not happy at PSG and he is not playing there’s a deal to be done. Newcastle have the funds to bank roll a deal for him.

“Let’s be honest, he’d be a serious upgrade on their current midfield. He knows the club, he knows the city. Why not? I think he’d be a great signing.”
