Newcastle United scouting mission sees them run rule over 6ft 4in star striker

Newcastle United's scouting department have been keeping a keen eye on talent in the EFL with the new owners keen to ensure all bases are covered at home and abroad.

The Magpies have money to spend in January and will require Premier League-ready players as they look to climb away from the danger zone.

However, ChronicleLive understands United were represented in the stands during Luton Town's 1-1 draw with Fulham at Kenilworth Road.

A senior Toon scout watched on as Fulham could only take a point from the Hatters in the Sky Bet Championship.

The watching brief was not to look at one specified target but would have included notes on Championship sensation Elijah Adebayo who scored the equaliser after ex-United star Aleksandar Mitrovic put the visitors in front.

Adebayo has 10 goals to his name so far this season with boss Nathan Jones hailing him as one of the best in his division.

The 6ft 4in striker has battled his way back after being released by Fulham and joining Walsall on a free transfer. He has taken no time at all to adapt to life in the second tier with Luton.

The 23-year-old's contract ends at the close of the 2021/22 season and there has been no shortage of interest.

Jones said recently: "If anyone is interested in Elijah they need to have one hell of a cheque book because he’s scoring goals at a wonderful Championship club and young, goalscoring target men of his size, stature, pace, power, learning capacity, they don't come cheap."

And speaking after the draw with Fulham, Jones reflected: "For me, they’re the best two number nines in the league. Mitrovic, and pay him full respect, in the Championship, he’s a top, top player.

"Adebayo will get there and he’s probably only 10, 11 months into his Championship career and that’s quite frightening.

"He doesn’t get paid as much as Mitrovic, but pound for pound there’s not a striker like him in the Championship."
