Newcastle United sanction loan for defender - but Jack Young stays on deadline day

Newcastle United have sanctioned an outgoing loan deal for Oisin McEntee on deadline day - but midfielder Jack Young looks set to stay at the club.

Young, who made his debut for the first-team in pre-season, was left out of the last couple of reserve team squads as EFL clubs considered a move for his services.

But after failing to agree a deal, Young was back in the United squad that faced Sheffield Wednesday in the Papa John's Trophy.

McEntee has joined Greenock Morton in the Scottish Championship and will stay north of the border until the end of the season.

Ecstatic Greenock Morton boss Gus MacPherson said: “We’re delighted to have been able to bring Oisin in on loan until the end of the season.

“Oisin is an exciting young prospect and is highly regarded by everyone at Newcastle, the next step in his development is to go and play first team football and we are grateful that Newcastle have given us the opportunity to showcase him.”

McEntee has trained with Steve Bruce's senior squad on several occasions in the last 18 months.
