Newcastle United's under-23s get hint on whether their season is over

Premier League chiefs are still hopeful of getting this season's Under-23 competitions completed when football returns later this year.

Sources close to the top-flight have indicated that Premier League 2 and the Premier League's League Cup competition plus the play-offs have not been scrapped at this stage.

With the expectation that the Premier League returns to action in June or July, potentially behind closed doors, the division's decision makers feel second string football will run alongside senior football.

This will be of significant interest to Newcastle's Under-23 squad who saw their season interrupted in the middle of a winning run.

Chris Hogg and Ben Dawson had masterminded five wins in a row and chalked up 14 goals in the process to keep hopes alive in both the play-offs and the League Cup.

A League Cup game away to Exeter, which had been postponed before the break for bad weather, plus four league games against Stoke City, West Brom, Norwich City and Aston Villa are all still to be played.

United need to maintain their winning run to book a place in the play-offs, a feat they achieved last term, losing narrowly to Southampton in the final at St Mary's Stadium.
