Newcastle United's U23 game victim of Storm Arwen and Elliot Anderson injured on chaotic night

Newcastle United's Under-23 clash with Aston Villa lasted just 28 minutes before being abandoned as Storm Arwen wreaked havoc.

With the temperature plummeting the young Magpies had already lost star man Elliot Anderson to an injury before Villa went ahead on 22 minutes through Cameron Archer.

Goalkeeper Dan Langley was unable to hold on to a shot and Archer followed up to score for the visitors during the second string clash for Elliot Dickman's side.

But it was blatantly obvious the game was in danger and the referee called both captains to the sideline to discuss the night's bleak prospects with the coaching teams.

Moments later the final whistle was sounded and the PA announcer confirmed to the hardcore band of supporters that the game was abandoned at Whitley Park.

Newcastle had been looking to build on the 3-1 win at Nottingham Forest in midweek with Anderson eager to catch the eye after a hat-trick.

But a game that had already been brought forward because of Villa's Papa John's Trophy game at Charlton Athletic next week ended in chaotic fashion as the second city side faced a long journey home in awful conditions.
