Newcastle United's surprise chase for a midfielder and where talks with Jens Cajuste stand

Newcastle United face stiff competition for Sweden international Jens Cajuste with his club FC Midtjylland holding out for a £13million this summer.

Cajuste has been looked at by United scouts and a clutch of other Premier League clubs, not least after featuring against Liverpool last season in the Champions League.

Sources in Denmark say that United have told FC Midtjylland that Cajuste is high on their priority list at the moment with Steve Bruce also indicating he was in dire need of a midfielder.

On Sunday he said: "We're very, very short in the middle of the park at the minute.

"Very, very short. It's something we need to address."

That comment came as a surprise in some ways given Newcastle have Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Matty Longstaff, Jeff Hendrick and Elliot Anderson on the books at the moment while the loan pursuit for Joe Willock is ongoing.

But Cajuste is the right age and in the right price range as far as both his fee and his wages are concerned.

Those talks for the defensive midfielder are currently ongoing.

Newcastle have already agreed to sanction an outgoing loan for Matty Longstaff while Anderson could also be heading to the EFL.

Cajuste has already seen a £10million offer from Rennes turned down while there is also interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace.

Yet Newcastle were still described as "keen" on the player last night by sources at his club.

United have a limited transfer budget but are looking to make ends meet with the sale of Florian Lejeune to Alaves.

Yoshinori Muto is another who could be sold if a club can be found and interestingly the Japan striker is represented by the same agency as Cajuste.
