Newcastle United's search for director of football continues as Marc Overmars makes cheeky swipe

Newcastle United director of football target Marc Overmars has signed a contract extension with Dutch giants Ajax.

The former Arsenal winger is now tied down to a deal until 2026 and Ajax appear to have taking a swipe at interested clubs, including Newcastle.

Indeed, a video that features a series of voicemail messages of mock voices offering Overmars a proposal is heard in a video before text reading: "Stop calling Marc" appears at the end.

Overmars was merely one of a number of candidates for the top job at Newcastle but Ajax have decided to make a big deal of the situation.

Overmars said: "I still feel very excited by my work and get a lot of satisfaction out of it.

"The cooperation with my fellow board members is very good, as well as with the people at the Toekomst (the Ajax sports complex) with whom I work together in the fields of scouting, youth, transfers, and the like.

"I have a feeling that my work at Ajax is not done yet, so I would like to continue here."

The video ends with Overmars taking a sip of liquor in an Amsterdam bar.

After insisting that former Chelsea transfer supremo Michael Emenalo had not been offered a job, although there were talks, Newcastle said on Sunday via a spokesperson: "There is a thorough recruitment process ongoing to ensure we get the right person for the job".
