Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali pictured at Milan airport as he jets in to Tyneside

Newcastle United new boy Sandro Tonali has been pictured leaving Milan to meet up with Eddie Howe and his new Toon team-mates.

The Italy international was approached by broadcast journalists at the airport but offered no comment as he prepared for his flight. Tonali's transfer to Newcastle was rubber-stamped earlier this week with the player thanking the Magpies for a big opportunity.

His involvement with Italy Under-21s at the European Championships ended recently as his country went out at the group stages of the tournament in Romania. Reports in Italy said he was on his way to meet club staff.

Eddie Howe had said this week: "I'm delighted to welcome Sandro to Newcastle United. He is an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a great fit for us. "At 23, Sandro already has important experience as a key player in one of Europe's top leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country.

"But he also has the opportunity and potential to grow and evolve with us, and I'm excited to add him to our squad as we approach the exciting season ahead."

Newcastle start pre-season training soon before embarking on their summer schedule which includes three games against Premier League opponents in the United States. It remains to be seen whether Tonali makes his debut in either the clash with Gateshead or away to Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox.

Speaking after his move, Tonali said: "First of all, I want to thank Newcastle United because they are giving me a huge opportunity for my career. I want to repay the trust on the pitch, giving it my all, as I always have. I'm really excited about playing at St James Park, I can't wait to feel the warmth of the fans."
