Newcastle United's rare and iconic 92/93 shirt appears at Umbro convention in Manchester

Newcastle United's classic Umbro kit from the 1992/93 season made the cut in a retro football kit exhibition in Manchester last week.

The famous and rare bar code kit was on display alongside some of the 1990s most iconic shirts at the #umbro95 collection.

Cult kits from Chelsea, Ajax, Parma, Inter Milan and Manchester City sat proudly alongside the Toon shirt.

United donned the kit between 1990 and 1993 but the shirt became a real hit as it coincided with Kevin Keegan's return to the club as manager.

It appeared in several different guises after first appearing on the scene with a Greenalls beer logo emblazoned on the kit.

However, United changed sponsor mid-season in 1991 with the Newcastle Breweries blue star making a return and supporters handed iron on badge kits to bring their shirt up to date.

But the shirts disappeared from the club shop for some time before a demand for shirts in 1992 - as Keegan's team romped to the top of the old Division One table with 11 consecutive wins - resulted in Umbro producing a new batch.

Uniquely, the kit also featured the McEwans Lager logo when the team appeared on TV.

There were also Geordie links at the exhibition with huge portraits of Paul Gascoigne wearing England's Italia 90 tracksuit and much loved Umbro shirt from the World Cup in Italy.

Replicas of Gazza's No 19 shirt were also popular at the display.

And Gazza even got a mention in Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport who covered the event and focused on shirts worn in Serie A by Gascoigne in his Lazio days.
