Newcastle United's 'proposed January transfer budget' set as Magpies eye reinforcements

Newcastle United reportedly have just £50m to spend in the January transfer window after a Saudi-led consortium completed the record-breaking takeover last week.

That's according to the Sunday Telegraph, who claim the Magpies will have a limited budget as the new owners look to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.

A number of high-profile players have already been linked with a move to Tyneside, but signing some of those could prove to be difficult considering their proposed budget.

It has been a manic fortnight at St James' Park since Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media purchased the club from Mike Ashley.

The news of the takeover sparked jubilant scenes outside of St James' Park and there is plenty of excitement about how far Newcastle can go under these owners.

Amanda Staveley, who has been appointed on the board of directors, stated in an interview with Sky Sports that she wants to take the Magpies back to the 'top' of the Premier League within the next decade.

This would be a huge feat as the last time they finished in the European places was back in 2012/13 when Alan Pardew was in charge and Demba Ba led the line.

However, Staveley's first task will be to ensure Newcastle stay in the Premier League and they recover from a disappointing start to the season.

The Magpies currently sit in 19th ahead of this afternoon's game against Tottenham Hotspur and have failed to win any of their opening eight matches.

This run of form has increased the pressure on Steve Bruce, but Staveley came out on Friday to back the 60-year-old despite the speculation surrounding his future.

The likes of Brendan Rodgers and Antonio Conte have been linked with the top job, although the former admitted that he is happy at Leicester City.

Should Newcastle continue to struggle then there's no doubt they will want to add quality in January to make them more competitive in the league.

Phillipe Coutinho is someone who has been linked, whilst James Tarkowski has been strongly rumoured to join Newcastle as he would be available on a free next summer.

Gareth Bale and Alexandre Lacazette are also among the whole host of players linked to the Toon, but the £50m budget would make it tough to sign all these in January.
