Newcastle United's next game with West Bromwich Albion in the hands of 'the medical people'

The fate of Newcastle United's scheduled fixture against West Bromwich Albion is now in the hands of "the medical people" - according to Baggies boss Slaven Bilic.

United's clash with Aston Villa was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the club's training ground last week with Newcastle's Benton base bolted shut for safety reasons and players ordered to stay at home.

Their next fixture against West Brom will be reviewed next week with Bilic not certain the fixture will go ahead.

Bilic, speaking in the build-up to his side's home game with Crystal Palace, said: "We don’t know yet.

"The health and security of the staff and everybody who is involved, referees, everybody, comes first.

"That’ll be down to the Premier League, and it’s down to the situation there.

"It’s even above the Premier League - it’s down to the medical people."

Bilic is keen for next Saturday's encounter with West Brom to go ahead as he does not want to fall too far behind Albion's rivals to stay in the Premier League.

He said: "To be fair, I’d like to play that game, not because there’s a chance that they’ll not be fully fit for that game, but because having a game in hand sounds good - if you’re at the top of the table.

"If you’re lacking points, it affects the table and the table affects your mentality, it affects the media, it affects the confidence.

"One game, okay.

"But if it becomes two games in hand, then the gap is bigger and you’re not in the position you want to be, it becomes a significant problem."
