Newcastle United's lack of urgency in Arsenal defeat was a disgrace

Lady luck had turned her smile upon Newcastle United of late but here they rejected another generous helping hand.

Perhaps United believed their own fine words uttered from those with puffed out chests. Or think they are good enough to go it alone. Either way they were horribly wrong.

We were back to where we have been all season. Deservedly beaten - and down to 10 men through indiscipline by the final whistle put all out of their misery.

United had cashed in on regular help since the debacle at Brighton. They Willocked Tottenham late on, somehow came back from the dead at Burnley, squeezed past a 10-man West Ham who came bearing gifts, and nicked a late point against a wasteful Liverpool.

The Gunners were next and again things were set up in their favour.

A poor Arsenal side arrived in no man's land, an unbelievable 11th in the table. Club legend Martin Keown had declared pre-game that Mikel Arteta was lucky to be still in a job.

Fans were rebelling against a hated owner after the European Super League debacle. And Arteta made a whopping eight changes for what he considered a non-match sandwiched between their two Europa League semi-final legs.

Yet what did we get? With safety only a victory away the display, attitude and lack of urgency was a disgrace.

United reverted to nature. Inept. Timid. Lifeless.

Perhaps Steve Bruce had hoped recent results would somehow win over disgruntled fans. Instead displays like this weaken his position because, in his second season, they still happen far too often.

Instead of getting amongst Arsenal from the kick off leaving a few calling cards they played as though on holiday.

Loaned cover keeper Mat Ryan, who had never won on Arsenal duty, was not tested once while Granit Xhaka, an emergency left-back, played the last 70 minutes strolling on a yellow card.

Already an obvious weakness operating out of position, he was never tested before or after he was under the threat of a sending off.

Instead of Jacob Murphy being released to pressure Xhaka he was forced to spend his time running his blood to water in a vain attempt to ward off the threat of Gabriel Martinelli.

Finally to complete United's humiliation Fabian Schar on his return from a long injury lay off stupidly cut down Martinelli a minute from time to be sent off with the points long gone.

United finished beaten, red carded, and red faced.

The tempo and direction of the match was set right from the start.

A goal down after only five minutes, the scorer Mohamed Elneny saw another effort cleared off the line by Miggy Almiron before the half hour.

Despite pairing big guns Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin for the first time since early February the Magpies produced nothing going forward in terms of bite or creativity and, sure enough, Arsenal increased their lead taking the game beyond the home side just after the hour mark.

Murphy was caught ball watching when Martinelli whipped over a pacy left wing cross for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, ever United's tormentor, to hook home at the far post.

Arsenal had won without breaking sweat. Newcastle had lost without breaking sweat.

Bruce, carried away by recent results, had talked up the growing possibility of Newcastle beating last season's points and position.

Well on this display we must all be grateful for three little bits of permanent luck - Fulham, West Bromwich and Sheffield United.

Arsenal, enduring one of their worst seasons for a long, long time, have now beaten Newcastle on three occasions. They have scored seven goals in the process while United have failed to score at all.

The Magpie record reads four wins from the last 25 matches with only one clean sheet in their last 21 PL home games.

Oh dreary me!
