The Newcastle United midfielder, Jonás Gutiérrez, has been given the all-clear after receiving treatment for testicular cancer.

Gutiérrez announced in September that he was being treated for the condition and was receiving chemotherapy in his native Argentina. But the 31-year-old tweeted on Monday that he had been allowed to leave hospital.

“Today I was given a medical discharge. Thank you very much to all who accompanied me at this time, especially my family, parents, brothers, godmother, friends and @alemaglietti,” he wrote.

Newcastle, for whom he has played 195 times since joining from Mallorca in 2008, made a similar announcement via their own official Twitter feed. “Everyone at NUFC is delighted to share the news that @elgalgojonas has been discharged from hospital in Argentina,” it said.

Gutiérrez had known of his condition for some time before going public, telling only relatives and close friends including compatriots Gabriel Heinze, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Martín Demichelis and club-mate Fabricio Coloccini after the illness was diagnosed last autumn.

Among the gestures of support shown to Gutiérrez by Newcastle fans during his fight against the disease was a standing ovation in the 18th minute – matching his squad number – of September’s home game against Hull City.
