Newcastle United's Fun88 deal at risk as St James' Park safe standing decision made

Newcastle United's commercial deal with shirt sponsors Fun88 could be at risk as a result of a government crackdown on betting firms.

Elsewhere, the Magpies have decided against a trial of safe standing at St James' Park.

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for September 23:

Fun88 deal at risk

Newcastle United may be forced to change shirt sponsors as part of a government crackdown on betting firms.

The Magpies have been sponsored by Fun88 since 2017 when managing director Lee Charnley jetted out to China to secure an initial three-year arrangement with the firm.

Since then Newcastle opted to extend that deal in 2020 and announced a long-term partnership with Fun88.

However, following the government's review of gambling laws Newcastle - as well as eight of their Premier League rivals - may have to look for an alternative deal.

Safe standing decision

Newcastle United will not be trialling safe standing at St James' Park this season.

However, the club are understood to be monitoring the trials around the Premier League this season and United have also been carrying out their own research on the possibility for the future.

Newcastle officials headed north of the border to see how the scheme was working at Celtic's Parkhead as the club look to gather information on the prospect of standing again at St James'.

Fans last stood on terraces back in the 1994/95 season (when the Milburn Stand paddocks were used for the final time) before the stadium became all-seater at the start of the 1995/96 campaign.

Savage promoted

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has promoted youngster Remi Savage to his first team-squad as preparations for the weekend trip to Watford continue.

The club released a batch of images on their website but there was no sign of midfielder Joe Willock after the summer signing was spotted in a protective boot earlier this week.

Savage, 19, arrived from Liverpool on loan in the summer and the centre-back joined fellow youngsters such as Joe White, Jack Young and Elliot Anderson in training.

Willock wasn't the only who wasn't pictured with skipper Jamaal Lascelles also missing.

NUST on TV changes

The decision to switch Newcastle United's November clashes against Arsenal and Brighton was done with 'zero consideration' for fans, according to the chair of the club's supporters trust.

United will still play Brighton at the Amex - a round trip of 700 miles from Tyneside - on Saturday, November 6th but with a 5.30 pm kick-off time instead of the traditional 3 pm one.

A few weeks later, the Magpies will head to North London to face Arsenal at the Emirates for a 12.30 pm kick-off on Saturday, November 27.

Toon fans have understandably been left angered at the decision to switch kick-off times as it will mean most having to book at hotel room due to the times of the trains, and journey time by road or bus.

Solano on chaotic day

Nobby Solano admits that trips to Vicarage Road always bring up memories of Newcastle United's chaotic final day clash at Watford back in 2007.

Just days before Glenn Roeder had paid the price for a poor run of form with his job and Nigel Pearson had been placed in caretaker control against the Hornets.

With one game to go it should have been plain sailing for the Magpies against a rock-bottom Watford side that had been relegated weeks earlier, but drama unfolded at the team hotel.
