Newcastle United's forgotten man Paul Dummett eyeing December return

Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett is hoping to be back in contention next month after a frustrating season of injury woe.

The former Wales international has not been seen in action for the Magpies since pre-season when he appeared in the second half of a 1-1 friendly draw against Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.

Having suffered a calf injury he was then pencilled in for a September return but suffered a setback in training.

As things stand he is the only absent player in Eddie Howe's new squad but he is eager to overcome his injury problems and impress the new gaffer.

Chronicle Live has learned from that Dummett is a "few weeks" away from a return and could be available for December's packed fixture list.

Newcastle could need him as they face six games in 26 days during the festive programme.

Like 2020/21 Dummett has missed the first half of the new season but he recovered from an Achilles problem to play in 16 games last term, scoring in the impressive 4-2 victory away to FA Cup winners Leicester City.

Newcastle activated a one-year extension on Dummett's contract last season but that is due to expire in summer 2022.

Now 30 Dummett is hoping to finish his career at Newcastle after making his debut away to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2013.
