Newcastle United's FA Cup passage made even more complicated after tough fifth round draw

Newcastle United have been handed a tricky away draw to Sky Bet Championship leaders West Bromwich Albion in round five of the FA Cup - if they manage to get past Oxford at the second attempt.

The Baggies showed what they were made of in the fourth round when they knocked out West Ham at the London Stadium.

United's potential trip to the Hawthorns would not take place until early March with games to be played midweek, and no replays involved with the tie needing to be settled on the night so extra time and penalties may come into play.

First, though, Newcastle must get beyond the League One side Oxford at the Kassam Stadium.

Bruce had said on Saturday: “By the way we still have enough to beat Oxford, no disrespect to them, but we didn't have enough behind me either to change something, and let's hope that can change in the next couple of weeks because to be without three, four strikers is tough at the minute."

Bruce will hope that he has players like Andy Carroll, Yoshinori Muto and - more interestingly - Dwight Gayle back for the possible fifth round date.

Gayle starred for West Brom last season on loan before returning to Newcastle last summer.

It will be a game he will be keen to play in after picking up a hamstring injury at Wolves recently.
