Newcastle United's Alexander Isak Forest performance was 'number nine masterclass’

Jermain Defoe labelled Alexander Isak’s performance against Nottingham Forest as “a masterclass” following the game. Three goals in two games - all of different variety - has refuelled the excitement around the Swedish international.

Newcastle United supporters only caught a glimpse of their record signing before an injury in September derailed his campaign. Even then, a stunning debut at Anfield showed fans exactly why Toon chiefs stumped up £58million to land their man.

A brilliant header to help down Wolves last weekend was followed up with an ice-cool brace at the City Ground. An improvised finish to pull Newcastle level wowed the crowd and, in stoppage-time, Isak showed nerves of steel to secure all three points.

Despite the lengthy delay, Isak - in front of the 3,000 travelling Toon supporters - appeared the calmest man in the stadium to brush the ball past Keylor Navas. The 23-year-old received every superlative under the sun at the full-time whistle after pulling the Magpies to within a whisker of the Champions League places.

Even former Sunderland striker Defoe was stunned by Isak's impact against Forest. He told Premier League Productions: “Again, his (Isak’s) performance tonight was a masterclass number nine performance.

“When you watch the game, I keep saying when he had to be that focal point he was strong with the ball, he was running in behind. Two good goals, pressure moments. He’s brilliant and you just can’t see him stopping at this point.”
